Sacred Geometry and Black Rock City
![]() | ![]() | ![]() |

The geometry of Black Rock City mirrors an ancient method of drawing a perfect hexagram and pentagram with only a compass and ruler. This piece of sacred geometry has been used all over the world for thousands of years. It is a universal symbol of power and unity.

The first point of the diagram is center camp which becomes the heart of the hexagram (flower of life). After drawing three circles, the man appears naturally in the geometry when using a ruler to find points on the vesica piscis to begin the pentagram. The temple is located on the horizontal piece of the pentagram.
The playa is a unique space and the ideal place to experiment with psychokinetic forces.

Center camp, the man, and the temple form the energetic core of the city.
> The hexagram (center camp) amplifies earthy energy (positive ~ negative).
> The pentagram (temple) amplifies ethereal energy (negative ~ positive).
> The X (man) unites these two sacred shapes while also serving as a common point (lightning rod) that grounds the entire city.
Fire is an essential part of Black Rock City geometry. Fire punctures the fabric of time and space much like the pin on a compass pokes a tiny hole in paper. Fires causes people to travel, gather and circle. The light and warmth from a fire helps us connect and be present. Fires release stored energy back into the universe and helps us do the same. Ideally, all fires would be on the playa in order to be on the same level plane. The placement of fire at key points is critical to the flow of energy in the city.
People are the main conduit of energy in the city and the design of the city ensures that the people generally move in a certain way. Placement of art and fire on the playa moves people from here to there in straight lines. As we work and play our actions and reactions bend these lines and we create billions of unique bonds that aren't easily broken.
Over time, the movement of people around fire in Black Rock City creates a unique geometric pattern that amplifies and distributes energy in mysterious ways. Duh?
The man who designed Black Rock City is Rod Garrett. Similarities between his site plans and the image below were realized at the 2012 burn.

The man in the geometry reflects our position in the cosmos.
He stands firmly rooted in the flower of life.
He holds the flower of consciousness.
He is unity and power.
"We ought not even to say that he will see, but he will be that which he sees, if indeed it is possible any longer to distinguish between seer and seen, and not boldly to affirm that the two are one." - Plotinus
